It's All About the PC
Sure, PC means personal computer or politically correct depending upon usage. But, you are at MovieMavenList.com. Here, when we talk about PC, we mean passion and commitment. These are the primary attributes of independent films and why they have it all over the typical Hollywood movie. The average cost of a Hollywood film is now over $100 million. Indies are made for a fraction of that. They are almost always labors of love where a filmmaker begs and pleads, sometimes for years, to get enough moolah, usually just a shoestring budget, to complete a project. This almost always means that a filmmaker has control of the production and post-production. Have you ever noticed how many producers and executive producers appear in the credits of Hollywood films? The studios and backers own these films from pre-production, throughout filming, and all the way until the movie appears in theaters or on DVD. Often indies are written and directed by the same person. The filmmaker might also be listed in the credits as producer, actor, editor, etc. Because of such involvement by a single person, independent films almost always embody a personal viewpoint. These are not films by committee cajoled into a cookie cutter, but rather the singular vision of an individual. The dialogue and script feel real almost to the point of seeming documentary in nature. The story is never crowded out or sublimated by special effects or universally accepted plotlines. And, most of all, filmmakers employ every ounce of their creativity and take chances without worrying about being reined in by some studio boss. Passion and commitment, this is what filmmaking should be about and it is the hallmark of independent films. |
