Who is the
MOViEmaven?
In 1997, Ira Koplowitz walked into a stadium-seat Cineplex to see the latest blockbuster, Face/Off. "Midway through, I realized just how far Hollywood had sunk. I turned around in my seat to confirm this with others in the theater - but to no avail - the majority of moviegoers were wide-eyed, even with the film's overtly special effects driven plot and idiotic storyline." At its conception, Brad wrote reviews and sent them by email to a number of friends and family. Ira often commented on the reviews and suggested films for The MOViEmaven to watch. In mid-2006, the idea to take the list to the next level, a website, was born. Moviemavenlist.com is the combined effort of Brad and Ira Koplowitz. Brad Koplowitz has reviewed independent and foreign films for over a decade. Website designer and publisher, Ira Koplowitz, is the creator of moviemavenlist.com, edits all reviews, and acts as occasional contributor. What is the MOViEmaven List and why does it exist? The big studios, in response to the burgeoning foreign and independent studios, have created the pseudo-indies (Focus Features, Sony Picture Classics, Fox Searchlight, to name a few), which produce the majority of films with any merit that come out of Hollywood today. Multi-million dollar ad campaigns, the Oscar and Golden Globe brouhaha, and movie star appearances on The Today Show, Oprah and Jay Leno to name a few, create the buzz that is largely responsible for their box office success. The MOViEmaven List seeks to highlight films that fly under the radar, films of promise and depth not being force-fed by the Hollywood machine. In short, The MOViEmaven List seeks to review films that have not been seen by the majority of the movie-going public. Although The MOViEmaven will at times review a new release, the vast majority of films are no longer playing in theaters but are available for purchase or rent. The MOViEmaven List is unique in that it only includes recommended films. No duds here, why bother. For every film on the MOViEmaven List, many others were watched and passed over. The MOViEmaven does not discriminate by type (drama, comedy, musical, etc) or rating (G, PG, R or X), but simply includes films, which are both highly creative and entertaining.
